ADC faction led by Dumebi Kachikwu plans national convention and interim leadership...
A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by its 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, has announced plans to hold a national convention and appoint interim leaders to oversee the party’s affairs.
CBI News reports that the decision was disclosed on Tuesday in Abuja by the group’s spokesperson, Norman Obinna, following what he described as an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting attended by state chairmen and other party members.
Obinna said the meeting was convened to address the prolonged leadership crisis within the party, noting that earlier reconciliation efforts had resulted in an agreement to organise a national convention to elect a new leadership.
According to him, the plan has not been implemented for nearly two years, leaving the party without a functional structure.
He accused the former leadership under Ralph Nwosu of attempting to hand over control of the party to individuals who are not members, while also trying to remove state chairmen who opposed them.
The faction stated that it had already initiated legal action to challenge those moves even before the recent position taken by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
It further argued that since the party has not had a National Working Committee since August 2022, the NEC remains the highest decision-making body.
As part of its resolutions, the group distanced itself from a coalition reportedly linked to figures such as David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and Bolaji Abdullahi, insisting that actions taken by that group in the party’s name are invalid.
The faction also rejected claims by Nafiu Bala Gombe to any leadership role, maintaining that he has never served as deputy national chairman.
Reaffirming its position, the group said the party belongs to all Nigerians and not a select few, accusing the opposing camp of attempting to take control at the expense of long-standing members.
It also stressed that Kachikwu remains a recognised member of the party.
The faction called on diplomatic missions in Nigeria not to engage with the rival coalition as representatives of the party and urged INEC to recognise the interim leadership arrangement pending the election of a new National Working Committee at the proposed convention.
