It's the most watched meeting in Washington today — Benjamin Netanyahu is back at the White House, and all eyes are on what he and Donald Trump will thrash out behind closed doors.

So, Benjamin Netanyahu has landed in Washington, DC. The official reason? He is in town for the funeral of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who died on 11 July. Graham was a huge Trump ally and a staunch supporter of Israel, and his memorial is happening today at 2 pm Washington time.

But before that, Netanyahu is squeezing in a big one — a meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House at 11 am. He flies back to Israel tomorrow.

1. Iran is top of the list

A White House official told Reuters that the war on Iran will dominate talks. There is real friction here. Trump has apparently been frustrated with Netanyahu, even reportedly calling him “f****** crazy” last month for undermining diplomatic efforts. Trump told the Financial Times: “I call the shots. I call all the shots. He doesn’t call the shots.”

Trump wants a deal to end a war that is deeply unpopular at home. Netanyahu, analysts say, is thought to favour keeping pressure on — including pushing for regime change in Tehran, which Trump is not keen on at all.

As Middle East Institute analyst Alex Vatanka told Al Jazeera, Netanyahu is likely to “sell the idea of regime change again” but it probably won’t go down well.

2. Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank

Also on the agenda is Lebanon. Israel says it is hitting Hezbollah strongholds, but Iran says no peace deal happens unless Israel pulls out of Lebanon.

Back home, the pressure is mounting over the occupied West Bank. And then there is the F-35 row with Turkiye. Netanyahu has said publicly he does not think Turkiye should get F-35s as it would upset the balance of power. Trump’s response? “We will sell to whoever we want.” Awkward.

4. Are they still mates?

It’s complicated. Last October Netanyahu called Trump “the greatest friend Israel has ever had in the White House.” Trump joked back: “He’s not easy – not the easiest guy to deal with – but that’s what makes him great.”

Now? Trump told reporters on Air Force One yesterday: “You know who wouldn’t survive without us? Israel. Bibi’s coming, he’ll tell you.” He added they remain “pretty close” but insisted Israel “needs the US”.

For Netanyahu, this meeting is huge. With Israeli elections due on 27 October and polls looking shaky, sources told Reuters he is hoping a White House photo-op will remind voters back home that he still has Trump’s ear. He has visited the White House more times under Trump than under any other US president.

What happens next is anyone’s guess. The White House says we might not even get a public readout. But one thing is for sure — this is a high-stakes hour for both men.
