Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intensified nationwide operations against drug trafficking, arresting several suspects, including a 93-year-old man and a 69-year-old medical doctor, while recovering large quantities of illicit drugs across multiple states.
CBI News reports that in Abia State, NDLEA operatives arrested a 93-year-old suspect, Pa Friday Ahukanna Chigbu, at his residence in Umuagbaigba, Amavo Nkwogu village, Osisioma Local Government Area, on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
A search of his home led to the recovery of 7.7 kilograms of skunk.
The suspect reportedly claimed he had been involved in the drug trade for over a year, adding that he had been using the substance since 1959.
In a separate operation, an Ivorian national, Gohouri Michael, 41, was arrested at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport while attempting to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Milan.
NDLEA said he ingested 82 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.49 kilograms and was to be paid €5,000 upon successful delivery.
Following further investigation, NDLEA operatives tracked and arrested a 69-year-old medical doctor, Dr. Chudi Daniel Ofomata, in Ogun State, describing him as a key figure behind the trafficking operation.
Items recovered from him included 63 grams of promazepam and seven ampoules of promethazine injection.
Across Ogun and Imo states, multiple suspects were arrested with significant quantities of skunk.
In Sango Ota, Ogun State, three suspects were apprehended with 34 kilograms of the substance, while in Imo State, a 26-year-old woman, Ayoka Akinwale, was arrested with 56.2 kilograms along the Onitsha–Owerri road.
In Niger State, NDLEA operatives arrested a couple, Abdullahi Umar, 32, and his wife, Adama Umar, 25, after 118 kilograms of skunk were discovered in their home during a search operation.
In Borno State, officers intercepted a trailer transporting vehicle spare parts and recovered 42,290 tablets of Rohypnol, 82,700 millilitres of codeine syrup, and 10,000 millilitres of pentazocine injection.
The owner of the consignment, Eleje Ibeabuchi, was later arrested.
In Lagos, a luxury bus heading to Port Harcourt was intercepted along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, leading to the recovery of 15 kilograms of “Scottish Loud,” a potent cannabis strain.
Two suspects, Kingsley Nsofor and Opara Ifeanyi, were arrested.
In another Lagos operation in Mushin, NDLEA officers seized 26,800 bottles of codeine-based syrup from a truck heading to Onitsha and arrested two suspects, Adesunloye Dada and Chibuzor Chime.
A raid in Abuja at the Tora Bora drug hub led to the arrest of eight suspects and the seizure of 11.516 kilograms of skunk.
In Edo State, NDLEA operatives intercepted two trucks carrying a total of 7,245 kilograms of skunk concealed among cartons of beer along Warrake Road, Auchi.
Five suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure.
The agency also continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaigns across schools, motor parks, and communities nationwide.
