The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria in a major political development that could reshape the race for Aso Rock ahead of the next general election.
CBI News notes that the decision comes as top party leaders, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, gather in Abuja for the NDC national convention aimed at ratifying key decisions and restructuring the party leadership.
According to the convention agenda, party stakeholders are expected to deliberate on zoning arrangements, ratification of the amended party constitution, and the election of new national executives.
The NDC has recently gained momentum following a wave of defections from rival political parties, including the ADC and PDP.
On Tuesday alone, 17 members of the House of Representatives dumped the ADC for the NDC during plenary at the National Assembly.
Among the defecting lawmakers are Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Thaddeus Attah, Lilian Orogbu, Afam Ogene, Jesse Onuakalusi, and several others.
The defections came barely two days after Peter Obi and former NNPP presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC from the ADC, receiving their membership cards amid cheers from supporters after a closed-door meeting with party leaders.
The latest political realignments are expected to intensify conversations around coalition politics and the battle for the 2027 presidency.
