The NCoS DG. said the department responsible for internal investigations will handle the matter professionally and may reach out to the petitioner for further evidence to aid the probe.
The Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations of extortion against some officers at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The directive followed a petition by a legal practitioner, Bala Dakum, accusing the officer in charge of the facility and some aides of extortion, abuse of office, corruption and gross misconduct. The NCoS Public Relations Officer, Jane Osuji, confirmed the development on Friday in Abuja.
CBI News reports that Osuji said the Service had received the petition and that the Controller-General had directed a full-scale investigation to ascertain the veracity of the claims.
“We are in receipt of the petition. Immediately the Controller-General was informed, he ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the truth of the allegations,” she said. She assured that the Service would not treat the matter lightly.
“This is not something we will sweep under the carpet. If the allegations are found to be true, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken,” Osuji added.
According to her, the department responsible for internal investigations will handle the matter professionally and may reach out to the petitioner for further evidence to aid the probe.
She emphasised that the NCoS remained committed to accountability and upholding its mandate.
CBI News reports that Dakum, Principal Partner of B.I. Dakum & Co., wrote the petition dated Feb. 11 to the Controller-General.
The petition was also copied to the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, and the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Dakum, who said he represents over 100 inmates at the facility, called for an independent and thorough investigation and urged the Service to sanction any officer found culpable.
