A Liberian woman living in Belgium flies into Nigeria with no sign of pregnancy, and leaves a month later with three children? That’s the shocking claim now being investigated by NAPTIP.
So this is a big one from Port Harcourt.
According to cbinews.tv, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, has sealed off a suspected illegal maternity home operating out of a residential apartment in Elelenwo, Port Harcourt, and arrested three people.
Who was arrested? The owner of the facility, a staff member, and an alleged facilitator of the sale.
Here’s what NAPTIP is saying happened: The whole operation was carried out by their operatives from Abuja and Rivers State, working with the Rivers State Ministry of Health, after they got intel about a child-trafficking syndicate buying and selling children.
The main suspect is said to be a Liberian national who lives in Belgium. Investigators claim she arrived in Nigeria with no evidence of pregnancy but somehow took custody of THREE children within just one month. And the price tag? A whopping ₦13.5 million allegedly changed hands.
Right now, NAPTIP says they are trying to trace the children to check on their welfare, confirm who their real parents are, and follow the money. The facility has been sealed to preserve evidence.
This is part of a wider nationwide crackdown on what many call “baby factories”, fake maternity homes allegedly involved in fertility scams and illegal adoption.
NAPTIP’s Director-General, Binta Bello, didn’t hold back. She said she was disturbed that foreign nationals now come to Nigeria to “procure children like a common object of trade.”
In a statement issued on Thursday by NAPTIP’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Vincent Adekoye, she added: “We have spread our dragnet to fish out all those involved in this case, and they shall be made to face the full wrath of the law.”
She also reassured the public that the investigation is still very much active and anyone found culpable will be prosecuted, while the safety of the children remains the top priority.
NAPTIP is now urging Nigerians to stay vigilant and report any suspected cases of child trafficking or illegal adoption to their nearest command.
