They were promised good jobs in Ghana. Instead, they were forced into prostitution and cybercrime. Now 12 Nigerian victims are finally home, and the hunt for their traffickers is on.
cbinewstv reports that the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has taken in 12 victims of human trafficking who were repatriated from Ghana.
NAPTIP’s Lagos Command confirmed the rescue on Tuesday via its social media page, noting it was part of ongoing cross-border work with the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana and other law enforcement partners.
The group included nine girls aged 17 to 19, two 22-year-old men, and a baby.
According to NAPTIP, early findings show the victims were lured by traffickers who promised lucrative jobs in Ghana. The reality was far darker — they were pushed into prostitution and cybercrime instead.
At the handover, Lagos Zonal Commander Mrs Agboko Comfort, represented by Omolara Ibrahim, Head of the International and Intelligence Cooperation Unit, encouraged the returnees to see this as a chance to start afresh. She thanked partner agencies for ensuring the victims were properly referred to NAPTIP.
She also made it clear: the agency is going after the trafficking network. “The Agency would go after their trafficker and prosecute them,” she assured.
In a related operation, Nigerian Army troops disrupted another trafficking attempt in Ibereko, Badagry, along the Seme border. During a routine patrol, soldiers intercepted suspects moving two female victims toward the border. The plan was to hand the girls over to another contact who would take them to Ghana.
Three suspects were arrested, but a fourth managed to escape and is still at large. The Army says investigations are ongoing.
