Students across the North-East are preparing to take to the streets peacefully as frustration grows over the kidnapping of 42 schoolchildren in Borno State.
The National Association of Nigerian Students, Zone E North-East, has called on its members to join a peaceful solidarity demonstration following the abduction of 42 students from Government Day Secondary School, Mussa, in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The protest is set to run from 5 to 7 June 2026 and will take place simultaneously across the five North-East states: Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba.
In a notice issued on Wednesday by Lukman Yusuf, Chief of Staff to the Zonal Coordinator, NANS said the demonstration aims to draw national attention to the plight of the abducted students and push for intensified efforts to secure their release.
The students’ body is also urging the Federal Government to strengthen security around schools and other educational institutions nationwide.
NANS has directed all its structures including Joint Campus Committee leaders, Students’ Union Government executives, delegates and stakeholders to mobilise responsibly and ensure the protests stay peaceful and orderly.
Zonal Coordinator for NANS Zone E, Comrade Muazu Hina, stressed that collective action is needed to demand both the safe return of the students and better protection for learners across Nigeria. The association says the demonstration is also about standing in solidarity with the affected families and keeping the public’s focus on the students’ ordeal.
The abduction of the 42 students has triggered widespread concern among education stakeholders, residents and civil society groups. It has also renewed calls for tougher security measures in schools, especially in northern Nigeria where attacks on educational institutions remain a serious issue. Security agencies are continuing efforts to secure the students’ release, while pressure mounts for urgent government intervention.
