It has been two weeks since gunmen walked into classrooms in Oriire and left with 46 people, including a two-year-old toddler. Now, Nigerian students say they have had enough.
Here is the story in plain terms.
The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, is mobilising nationwide. Its president, Akinteye Babatunde, confirmed on Friday that every NANS structure and allied stakeholder has been called out for a solidarity and advocacy rally in Oyo State.
Why? Because 39 pupils and seven teachers taken from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area are still in captivity, and NANS is calling it heartbreaking and unacceptable.
According to the invitation letter sent out on Friday and published by cbinewstv, the plan for Monday, 1 June 2026, is clear:
The team will visit the affected schools: Community High School/Grammar School, Ahoro-Esiele; L.A. Primary School, Ahoro-Esiele; and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School.
They will then meet the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, and the Director of the Department of State Services in the state.
Afterwards, they will lead a peaceful walk against insecurity through Ibadan, the state capital.
Akinteye is not mincing words. In his words: “It has been two weeks since this cruel act was perpetrated, and it is appalling that, till this day, the abducted students and teachers are yet to be rescued. At this critical crossroads, silence is no longer golden; we must act decisively and forthwith.”
He is calling on all student leaders, activists, sister unions and well-meaning Nigerians to join the movement and demand the immediate release of the victims.
As a reminder of what happened, gunmen attacked the schools in Oriire two weeks ago. They killed a teacher, Michael Oyedokun, and abducted seven teachers and 39 pupils. Among those taken was two-year-old Christianah Akanbi.
NANS says the rally is not just a protest, it is a demand for urgent action from security agencies.
