Tension in Ogun State as five polytechnic students are abducted from their hostel, just days after a fatal robbery attack claimed the life of another student.

This is deeply troubling.

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has come out strongly to condemn the abduction of five students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, in Ogun State, calling it a frightening sign of how insecure tertiary institutions have become.

According to a statement released on Friday, 31 July by its President, Akinteye Babatunde, the students were kidnapped when armed men stormed a private hostel along Paraga Road in Ipara on Wednesday, 29 July 2026.

NANS says the incident has left the entire student community in fear and mourning, especially as it comes barely days after another horrific attack at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, where an HND II student, Miss Ahmed Sekinat, was killed and several others injured during a robbery.

In its statement, the association did not mince words.

“As the apex leadership of Nigerian students, saddled with the responsibility of protecting the interests and welfare of students across the country and in the diaspora, we condemn, in its entirety, this reprehensible attack on the safety and security of Nigerian students,” NANS said.

The student body stressed that no one should have to risk their life just to get an education, adding: “Education is a right, and no student should have to trade their safety for the pursuit of knowledge. We cannot stand idly by while our campuses become dens of kidnapping and all forms of criminality. The security of students is non-negotiable; it is paramount and mandatory.”

NANS is now calling on the Federal Government, the Ogun State Government, and all security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigerian Army, to deploy every available resource to ensure the abducted students are rescued unharmed.

But beyond the rescue, NANS says students are tired of empty assurances. What they need is real, sustained security both on and off campus.

The association also made a strong case for affordable on-campus accommodation, noting that many students are forced to live in vulnerable off-campus hostels due to a lack of options.

“The government must recognise the importance of investing heavily in the construction of affordable, campus-based hostels for students, which would significantly reduce students’ exposure to the security risks associated with off-campus accommodation,” the statement added.

NANS concluded with a firm assurance that it would not back down until the abducted students are safely returned and lasting security measures are put in place nationwide.

“The safety of Nigerian students is non-negotiable. We will not relent in our advocacy until the abducted students are rescued and returned safely, while concrete and lasting security measures are put in place across tertiary institutions nationwide.”
