It’s been a terrifying few days on the Ebenebe axis in Anambra — an INEC staff member has been abducted, a businessman shot, and now police are asking if the same gang is behind it all.

So, here’s what we know.

An employee of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Christy Nkiru Okeke, was abducted by gunmen along the Ebenebe axis of Awka North Local Government Area.

According to cbinews.tv, the incident happened at about 7:00 p.m. on July 24. Her family had been frantically searching for her before her abductors finally made contact — demanding a whopping N40 million ransom.

Her husband has since reported the case to the B Division Police Headquarters in Awka.

And that’s not even the full story. Residents are seriously on edge because barely an hour before Mrs Okeke was taken, the same road saw another violent attack.

A businessman, Emmanuel Nwobodo, was reportedly attacked near Ebenebe Community Secondary School while returning home from Oba. Four armed men allegedly opened fire on his Mercedes-Benz. Miraculously, he managed to escape, only to discover later that he’d been shot in the left knee. His car was riddled — radiator damaged, rear seat belt guard smashed.

He’s now receiving medical attention.

But there’s a twist that has investigators talking. One of his staff members, Tochukwu Afunenu, who was said to be carrying the businessman’s ATM card and two phones, fled into the bush during the attack. Shortly after, voice notes were allegedly sent from his phone claiming he had also been kidnapped and demanding N40 million.

Police are now trying to untangle whether that second kidnap claim is genuine or part of a bigger, more organised plot.

As cbinews.tv reports, security operatives have launched extensive combing operations across surrounding bushes and intelligence units are tracking leads. The thinking is that this isn’t random — it looks like a well-organised criminal network operating along that axis.

The Police have assured residents that efforts are underway to rescue the abducted INEC worker and apprehend those responsible, while also appealing to the public to come forward with any useful information.

This comes just days after armed hoodlums attacked an INEC PVC distribution centre at Oyinlola DC Primary School in Okuku, Odo-Otin LGA, Osun State, and carted away three packs of PVCs ahead of the governorship election. INEC, however, says it remains committed to a credible process.

Fingers crossed for Mrs Okeke’s safe return.
