Civilians among the dead after junta attack in Rakhine.
A Myanmar military air strike on a village market in the western state of Rakhine killed at least 17 people on Wednesday.
The strike hit the village of Yoe Ngu in Ponnagyun township, about 33 kilometres northeast of the state capital Sittwe, on Tuesday, according to the ethnic minority Arakan Army and a local volunteer group.
Report says 17 civilians, including three children, were killed in the marketplace attack around 2:00 pm, with 15 more injured. Locals put the death toll slightly higher, saying 18 people were killed and 16 wounded. Witnesses say several buildings were destroyed or burnt and bodies scattered across the area.
Myanmar has been engulfed in civil war since the military seized power five years ago, sparking resistance from democracy activists and ethnic minority groups like the AA.
Rakhine, almost entirely under AA control, has faced repeated military air strikes and blockades.
Aid groups have warned that the ongoing conflict, compounded by reduced international assistance, has caused a dramatic rise in hunger and malnutrition in the region. Both the military and the AA have been accused of human rights abuses, including abductions, torture, and executions.
The military continues to hold key positions in Rakhine with the help of supply airlifts and strikes carried out by its fleet of Chinese and Russian-made aircraft.
