Votes take place under internet shutdown to 'prevent spread of misinformation, incitement to violence'
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni cast his vote on Thursday January 15, in Rwakitura.
This marked the start of his bid for a seventh term in office and an extension of a rule that began nearly four decades ago.
Museveni arrived at the polling station under heavy security, waited in line alongside other candidates before he voted.
Preliminary election results emerged within the next 48 hours.
Ugandan authorities imposed a nationwide internet shutdown, which it said 'prevented the spread of misinformation' and incitement to violence' during the electoral process.
The 81-year-old, in power since 1986, campaigned on a platform of protecting past achievements and maintaining stability.
His main challenger, Bobi Wine, a singer-turned-politician emerged as the opposition figure, drew strong support from younger voters calling for political change.
