Showmax launched in 2015 in South Africa spread rapidly across the continent...
Canal+ will discontinue the loss-making Showmax streaming service developed by South African pay-TV operator MultiChoice Group.
The French company which bought MultiChoice in 2025 said the decision comes after “substantial annual losses experienced by the Showmax business” that “proved unsustainable".
A statement by the operator on Thursday said ending the service won’t result in any job cuts
It added that the group will provide staff with various transition options.
Canal+ said the decision is consistent with its plan to deploy its in-house streaming platform, which includes deals with AppleTV and Warner Bros Discovery Inc.’s HBO Max, to African consumers it didn’t service before the MultiChoice deal.
While it did not provide a timeline for the discontinuation of the Showmax streaming service, the firm said subscribers remain their “priority”.
“We understand that this news may raise questions. Showmax subscribers are a priority for us, and we are working on plans to ensure clear communication and a smooth transition when the time comes.
Showmax offers sports, movies, documentaries, and series streamed on
over the internet.
