"Some songs are not meant to leave the drive" — that's just one of the brutal takes greeting Mr P's latest release, as fans question whether the former P-Square star still has the magic touch.

Another day, another Mr P storm on Nigerian Twitter.

According to cbinews.tv, Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, better known as Mr P, is currently catching serious heat online following the release of his new single, ‘I Love You Because’.

The track itself dropped on 7th August as the lead-up to his second solo studio album, OG Forever, due later in 2026. The official music video – which stars Nollywood’s sweetheart couple Stan Nze and Blessing Nze – landed a few days later. Mr P shared the video on X with a simple, “What do you guys think?” And oh, people thought.

The replies were ruthless.

One user fired: “Some songs are not meant to leave the drive, no be all song dem dey release.”

Another tried to be constructive: “Commercial music requires some wide range of relatability, either in delivery or in lyricism, except that's not the purpose for this drop. But then, do you, Mr P.”

Others didn’t bother with diplomacy at all: “Wrap up this mid song,” one person wrote. Another simply declared, “This thing no dey work again.”

For context, this isn’t Mr P’s first solo rodeo. After the iconic P-Square – the duo he formed with twin brother Paul Okoye – first split in 2017, Peter rebranded as Mr P and dropped hits like ‘Cool It Down’ and ‘Paloma’, while his debut solo album The Prodigal arrived in 2021. That was the same year P-Square staged their highly celebrated reunion in November 2021, before splitting again in 2024 amid fresh family disagreements. Historically, neither twin has quite been able to replicate the chart dominance of P-Square classics like ‘Personally’, ‘Alingo’ and ‘Chop My Money’, which defined Afrobeats’ global crossover era between 2007 and 2014.

So the timing of this backlash is awkward. As reported by cbinews.tv, the Okoye family has been back in the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks, with Peter publicly accusing elder brother and former manager Jude Okoye of financial misconduct relating to P-Square earnings – allegations Jude has denied. With the family name trending for courtroom drama rather than music, some fans have accused Mr P of trying to ride the wave to promote his solo project.

Mr P is yet to respond to the criticism around ‘I Love You Because’ specifically. However, earlier this year, he did clap back at trolls questioning his age and relevance, arguing that older international acts like Chris Brown and Usher don’t get the same scrutiny.

For now, ‘I Love You Because’ remains the official curtain-raiser for OG Forever. Whether it grows on fans or gets skipped remains to be seen.
