Mostly concessional financing to back public investment and economic reforms.
The World Bank aims to provide Mozambique with six billion dollars in mostly concessional financing for public investment projects over the next five years, a senior official said on Monday.
The Southern African nation’s public finances are under pressure, with the International Monetary Fund warning last week of worsening debt dynamics following its annual review.
According to the World Bank, the funding to support the government’s development strategy will be highly concessional and largely in the form of grants.
The Washington based lender also hopes to mobilise a further four billion dollars in private sector financing.
Mozambique’s finance minister said the World Bank is developing a 921 million dollar macro fiscal support framework to bolster economic stability.
Although there is renewed optimism over the restart of a major liquefied natural gas project led by TotalEnergies, the IMF and other institutions have pointed to significant challenges, including debt service delays and persistent fiscal deficits.
Mozambique has also faced repeated cyclones and floods, disasters scientists say have been intensified by climate change.
