Morocco is cashing in on its football fame and getting ready for 2030, with plans for thousands of new hotel beds to welcome the world.
Morocco is planning a major tourism push ahead of the 2030 World Cup, with 60000 new hotel beds on the way.
cbinews.tv reports that the expansion is equal to about a fifth of its current total. The tourism minister said the move will prepare the country for when it co hosts the tournament alongside Portugal and Spain.
The North African nation is riding a wave of global attention after its historic quarter final run and becoming the first African and Arab side to reach the semi finals in Qatar four years ago.
Officials say they want to turn that spotlight into long term gains. Tourism already employs hundreds of thousands of Moroccans and contributes about 7 percent of gross domestic product.
The government is investing more than 190 billion dirhams, about 20 billion dollars, to build and expand rail, road, airports, stadiums and other urban infrastructure ahead of the 2030 tournament. How many matches each co host will stage is yet to be decided.
Morocco has already added 45000 hotel beds over the past four years, bringing the current total to a little over 300000, official data shows.
The country welcomed nearly 20 million tourists last year, making it the most visited destination in Africa. It now aims to attract 26 million visitors by 2030.
Moroccos central bank expects tourism revenue to reach a record 161 billion dirhams in 2027, up from 138 billion dirhams in 2025. More air routes from Europe have also boosted the sector.
The next phase of growth will focus on increasing arrivals from China, the United States and the Middle East through improved air connectivity, the minister said.
The country is also looking to diversify tourism beyond traditional hotspots such as Marrakech and Agadir. This includes making the capital Rabat, with its centuries old monuments, museums and sports facilities, a hub for cultural events, sports events and business travel.
