It was pure theatre at the UN - and not the polite kind. As Benjamin Netanyahu approached the iconic green marble rostrum in New York on Thursday, dozens of delegates stood up, pushed back their chairs, and walked out. Some booed. Some clapped for Israel. One man at the podium just smirked and went for broke.
What Did Netanyahu Actually Say?
If you expected contrition, you didn't get it. This was vintage Bibi - defiant, combative, and unfiltered.
In his speech, Netanyahu dismissed genocide allegations in Gaza as “the greatest lie of the century” and claimed “we'd all be dead” without joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran. He insisted Israel had taken measures to protect Palestinian civilians, accusing Hamas of using them as “human shields”.

Why This Walkout Hits Different?

On one side of the hall, you had Palestinian diplomats and Global South delegates who have spent nearly three years watching Gaza turn to rubble. On the other, Israeli families of hostages watching their prime minister from the gallery, cheering him on.
Outside those walls, the numbers are sobering. According to Gaza health authorities and UN tracking, more than 42,000 Palestinians have been reported killed since October 2023, with over 1.9 million displaced. Israel puts its own death toll from 7 October and the subsequent war at over 1,700. That human cost is exactly why the symbolism of delegates walking out - refusing to even listen - landed so heavily on social media.
