The new policy will be rolled out in phases, beginning with its U.S. headquarters.
Microsoft will mandate a return to the office for its employees, requiring them to work on-site at least three days per week starting next year. The company announced the new policy in a blog post on Tuesday.
The change will be implemented in three distinct phases, according to Amy Coleman, Microsoft's chief people officer. The first phase will affect employees near the company's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, followed by other U.S. locations, and then international employees.
The blog post specifies that employees living within a 50-mile radius of Microsoft's head office will be expected to be in the office three days a week by the end of February 2026. The company added that timelines and details for other U.S. locations would be announced soon, with planning for employees outside the United States beginning next year.
The move comes as some technology firms are beginning to roll back the work-from-home setups that became widespread during the pandemic. Microsoft joins other major tech companies, including Amazon, in mandating that workers return to their offices.
CBI News reports that the new policy is a shift for a company that had previously been known for its flexible work arrangements. It signals a move toward a more consistent, in-person work model for its employees.
