Mexico’s proposal to shut schools nearly 40 days early ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has triggered nationwide criticism, with parents, educators, and state officials warning that millions of students could suffer major learning losses.
According to CBI News TV, the Mexican government is reconsidering its controversial plan to shorten the 2025/2026 academic calendar ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following widespread public backlash.
Education Secretary Mario Delgado had earlier announced that schools across the country would close on June 5, almost 40 days before the originally scheduled end of the school year on July 15. Officials cited preparations for the FIFA World Cup as well as concerns over rising heat waves as reasons for the adjustment.
The announcement sparked immediate criticism from parents, teachers, education experts, and local authorities, many of whom warned that the decision could negatively affect the education of more than 23 million students nationwide.
President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that federal education authorities would meet with parents and other stakeholders to review the proposal and reach a broader consensus.
“The goal is to preserve the traditional six-week vacation period while listening to all parties involved,” Sheinbaum stated.
Several Mexican states have already pushed back against the proposal. Authorities in Jalisco announced that schools would only suspend classes during the four World Cup match days scheduled in Guadalajara, while Nuevo León plans to maintain its regular academic calendar despite Monterrey hosting four tournament matches.
Education think tank México Evalúa also warned that reducing the school year could significantly cut effective learning time for millions of students.
Meanwhile, President Sheinbaum assured citizens that key infrastructure and security projects — including upgrades to Estadio Azteca and Mexico City International Airport — would be completed before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
