Football fans around the world are holding their breath after Lionel Messi appeared to pick up a leg issue during Inter Miami’s MLS clash — just weeks before the World Cup kicks off.
Lionel Messi has sparked fresh injury concerns ahead of the 2026 World Cup after asking to be substituted during Inter Miami’s MLS clash against Philadelphia Union.
According to cbinews.tv, the Argentine superstar was seen clutching the back of his left leg before coming off in the 73rd minute on Sunday night. Thankfully for fans, Messi appeared to walk normally as he headed straight down the tunnel.
Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos later downplayed fears of a serious injury, explaining that the substitution was largely precautionary due to the difficult wet pitch conditions in Miami.
“As far as I know, we don’t have a medical report yet, but he was really fatigued,” Hoyos said after the match. “The pitch was heavy and when in doubt, you don’t take risks.”
The 38-year-old football icon is widely expected to feature for Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite not officially confirming his participation yet. If selected, it would mark a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Argentina are expected to announce their squad next week ahead of their opening match against Algeria on 16 June.
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has carefully managed his playing time but has still battled occasional hamstring problems — something fans will now be watching closely ahead of football’s biggest tournament.
