Governor Mbah Warns Criminals in Enugu: "You Can Run, But You Cannot Hide" As New DNA Forensics Centre Opens
Enugu just levelled up its crime-fighting game — and Governor Peter Mbah says criminals are officially out of options.
Governor Peter Mbah isn’t mincing words for anyone thinking of stirring trouble in Enugu State. Speaking at the commissioning of the Centre for DNA Forensics and Criminal Investigation (CeDFoCI) on Wednesday, he made it crystal clear: *"You can run, but you cannot hide."
The new centre, tucked away at Godfrey Okoye University in Ugwuomu, Nike, is a big-deal partnership between the Enugu State Government, the university, and the Nigeria DNA Learning Centre. And according to Mbah, it’s a gamechanger for security in the state.
"Enugu is open to investors. Enugu is open to innovators. Enugu is open to people who want to build, create, and contribute," Mbah said. "But for those who seek to undermine the peace and security of our people, the message is very simple: you can run, but you cannot hide."
He called CeDFoCI one of the most important investments his administration has made, tying it directly to his Citizens’ Charter. The logic? None of his big plans for Enugu work without security first.
While crime rates have already dropped significantly under his watch, Mbah admitted there’s still work to do. That’s where the new centre comes in — boosting the state’s ability to investigate crimes, track offenders, and back up law enforcement with hard science.
His warning to criminals was blunt: *"Every crime scene leaves a trace. And we can now track that trace and use it as evidence against you. For too long, many crimes have gone unresolved because the tools did not exist to capture and prosecute you. Now they do."*
He also had a word for residents: if a crime happens, keep your distance, call the authorities, and let the pros handle it. One contaminated fingerprint or stray hair could mean lost evidence.
The launch drew praise from heavy hitters. Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, said the facility puts Enugu — and Nigeria — in league with countries using forensic science at the heart of justice. Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, added that it’ll build public trust because "investigations are transparent, impartial, and supported by credible evidence." Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Professor Christian Anieke, also applauded Mbah’s security push.
Mbah noted that the centre isn’t just for Enugu. It’s open to agencies, organisations, and even other governments. "This facility may be located here, but its significance extends far beyond our borders," he said. "It is our contribution to the quest for a justice system that is guided not by conjecture, but by evidence; not by suspicion, but by science."
He also tipped his hat to President Bola Tinubu, crediting federal reforms for freeing up state funds to invest in projects like this, and backing the President’s State Police Bill as a bold move for modern security.
Professor George Ude, Founding Director of CeDFoCI, explained the centre will anchor investigations in scientific truth, train everyone from police to students, and push research in forensic genetics and molecular biology.
And in a nod to the partnership, Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Calistus Onaga, represented by Rev. Fr. Victor Eze, said nation-building can’t be left to government alone: "While the Church forms conscience and provides moral values, the state provides the structure for justice and security."
