12 people are dead and 9 injured after gunmen stormed an informal settlement in Johannesburg. Police are still searching for the attackers, and locals fear illegal mining turf wars are to blame.
A massive manhunt is now underway in South Africa after a horrific mass shooting left 12 people dead in Johannesburg, reports cbinews.tv.
According to police, at least 10 suspects armed with rifles rolled up to the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland late on Tuesday night. They were dropped off near a petrol station in a white Toyota Quantum, stormed the settlement through both entrances, and opened fire on residents at multiple spots before jumping back in the vehicle and fleeing.
Police say they were called out to a “shooting in progress” at around 23:10 local time [21:10 GMT]. When officers arrived, eight men and three women had already died at the scene. Another man later died in hospital. Nine others are being treated for gunshot wounds.
Right now, the motive is still unclear. Police told cbinews.tv it’s all part of an ongoing investigation. But some members of the Jumper’s community reckon the shooting could be tied to a turf war between illegal miners operating in the area.
Illegal mining has been surging across South Africa, and it’s no small thing — these groups target disused gold mines and flog what they find on the black market. It’s often violent too. President Cyril Ramaphosa even sent in the military earlier this year to try and shut some operations down.
Sadly, shootings in informal settlements aren’t rare. They’re often linked to gang violence or personal disputes. Last year, nine people were killed in a mass shooting at a Johannesburg tavern.
South Africa has one of the highest murder rates globally. There are about three million legally held firearms in the country, plus at least the same number of unlicensed ones, according to Gideon Joubert from the South African Gunowners’ Association.
