Mascherano steps down for personal reasons after record-breaking season...
Inter Miami CF have confirmed that Javier Mascherano has stepped down as head coach for personal reasons, less than a year after leading the club to the most successful campaign in its history.
The former Argentina captain leaves after guiding the club to its first Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup and a record-breaking 2025 season.
Mascherano announced his decision in a statement, thanking the club, players, and supporters for their support during his tenure.
“I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF,” he said.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank the club for the trust they placed in me, every employee who is part of the organisation for the collective effort, but especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments.”
Mascherano also expressed gratitude to the club’s supporters, describing them as key to the team’s success.
“I also want to thank the fans and La Familia, because none of this would have been possible without them,” he said.
“I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the club all the best moving forward.”
Managing owner Jorge Mas praised Mascherano for his contribution to the club’s success and said he would always remain an important figure in the club’s history.
“Javier will forever be part of this club’s history and will always hold a special place in the Inter Miami CF family,” Mas said.
“Not only for being a key part of unforgettable achievements, such as winning the MLS Cup and the team’s historic performance at the Club World Cup, but also for the example he set through his dedication and daily work leading the team.”
He added that the club respected the coach’s decision and wished him success in his future endeavours.
Mascherano’s first season in charge produced remarkable results for Inter Miami.
The club won the MLS Cup and the Eastern Conference title, while scoring 101 goals across the regular season and playoffs, the highest total recorded in a single campaign in MLS history.
The team also set a postseason record with 20 goals and played 58 matches in all competitions.
Inter Miami also achieved major milestones in international competitions under Mascherano’s leadership.
The club reached the knockout rounds of the FIFA Club World Cup, becoming the first MLS team to achieve the feat.
They also made history as the first Concacaf club to defeat a European side in an official international match and the first team from the United States to win a match in the tournament.
Regionally, the club reached the semi-finals of the Concacaf Champions Cup and also advanced to a second final in the Leagues Cup.
Mascherano departs alongside the coaching staff who joined him in January 2024.
The club confirmed that assistant coach Guillermo Hoyos will temporarily take charge of the first team for upcoming fixtures.
Hoyos, a former professional footballer, has over two decades of playing experience and previously worked in coaching roles across South America and Europe, including youth development with FC Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Chief Soccer Officer Alberto Marrero will assume sporting director duties as the club begins the search for a permanent replacement.
