Old Trafford might soon have a new neighbour, and it is set to be the biggest stadium in the UK.
It is a huge step for Manchester United’s big stadium dream.
The club has confirmed it has secured the majority of the land needed to build a brand new 100,000-capacity arena just a stone’s throw from the iconic Old Trafford, cbinews.tv reports.
In a statement posted on the club’s official website, manutd.com, on Monday afternoon, United said it had acquired a 25-acre site located around 350 metres north-west of the current stadium.
That move clears a major hurdle in the club’s long-term plan to turn the Old Trafford area into one of the most dynamic sporting and entertainment destinations in the world.
The proposed new stadium would be the largest sporting arena in the UK. The club says it will act as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the surrounding district, and it plans to work directly with local businesses affected by the plans to support them through the transition.
Collette Roche, CEO of Manchester United’s New Stadium Development, called it a significant milestone. “Today’s news highlights the progress we’re making towards a world-class new home for Manchester United and represents a significant milestone as we move into the next phase of development,” she said.
She added that the project fits with both local and national growth ambitions.
The numbers are big. The 370-acre regeneration is expected to deliver around 15,000 new homes, including affordable housing, create 48,000 new jobs locally and more than 90,000 nationally, and contribute over £7 billion a year to the UK economy.
The announcement lit up social media, especially on X where the club’s post pulled in thousands of engagements.

But not everyone was celebrating. Some fans questioned the club’s priorities.
