Manchester City reportedly shortlists Alonso, Maresca, Fabregas as potential successors to Guardiola...
Former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has emerged as one of three candidates shortlisted by Manchester City to replace Pep Guardiola, amid growing speculation that the Spaniard could leave the club at the end of the season.
According to the UK Telegraph, there is increasing belief within football circles that Guardiola may step down from his role in May, despite having a contract that runs until 2027.
Although Guardiola still has more than a year left on his deal, the report said Manchester City are taking proactive steps by identifying potential successors should he decide to walk away.
CBI News reports that the club’s hierarchy is reportedly keen to avoid uncertainty at the end of the campaign, prompting early succession planning.
Alonso, who previously managed Real Madrid, has now joined a three-man shortlist drawn up by the Premier League champions.
Also on the list is former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who is said to have informed the Blues on two occasions that he was in talks with Manchester City.
Completing the shortlist is Como head coach Cesc Fabregas. His side currently sits sixth in Serie A, and their push for European qualification this season has reportedly impressed City’s decision-makers.
