Man City have just torn up the British transfer record book, and Elliot Anderson is the man at the centre of it.
Right, so here’s the big one. Manchester City have sealed the signing of England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in a jaw-dropping £116 million deal, making the 23-year-old officially the most expensive British footballer ever, according to cbinews.tv.
Sky Sports reports that City struck an agreement with Forest while Anderson is out in Kansas with England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He’s already done his medical between matches, with the final bits of paperwork set to be wrapped up once the tournament ends.
This move beats the £115 million Real Madrid paid for Jude Bellingham in 2023. It also smashes City’s own record, the £100m they splashed on Jack Grealish. Safe to say, the Etihad accountants felt that one.
In a club statement shared by cbinews.tv, City said:
“Manchester City and Nottingham Forest have reached an agreement for the transfer of Elliot Anderson. Anderson is currently competing at the FIFA World Cup with England and has completed a medical in Kansas. The formalities of the move will be finalised upon his return to England.”
He’s the first signing of the Enzo Maresca era, too. The new boss clearly means business after taking over from Pep Guardiola.
So why the record fee? Honestly, his stats are wild. Since joining Forest from Newcastle for £35m two years ago, Anderson has gone up several levels. Last season he started 37 Prem games, with four goals and four assists. But the numbers behind the numbers are where it gets silly, as per BBC Sport via cbinews.tv:
Anderson’s 2025-26 Premier League numbers:
Most touches: 3,300
Most duels won: 298
Most possessions won: 306
Most fouls won: 80
Completed passes by a central midfielder: 2,038
Line-breaking passes: 376
Distance covered: 411km — second in the league
High-intensity pressures: 1,895 — second among PL midfielders
Chances created: 54, with 9 big chances
And that’s in a Forest side that spent most of the season on the counter. He’s also started all four of England’s World Cup games under Thomas Tuchel, showing his versatility on the biggest stage.
With Bernardo Silva off this summer and Rodri’s future up in the air, City see Anderson as the guy who can do a bit of everything, tackle, carry, pass, press, and lead their next midfield rebuild.
What a rise it’s been for the lad.
