Is Oyo State about to change political colours ahead of 2027? A minister in President Tinubu's cabinet has just made a very public pitch to Governor Seyi Makinde.
Here is the gist, as reported by cbinews.tv:
It was meant to be all about roads, but politics quickly took centre stage.
Speaking on Monday at the flag-off of the dualisation of the Ibadan-Ijebu Road in Ogun State, the Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, openly called on Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to dump his current political camp and join the ruling All Progressives Congress.
President Bola Tinubu was represented at the event by Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, while Governor Makinde, who is reportedly eyeing the 2027 presidency on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), was absent.
Goronyo did not hold back. After commending Governor Abiodun for his development strides in Ogun, he declared that the "central train of development is moving fast under our progressive banner."
He then went straight for the big ask.
"I therefore warmly welcome and openly invite His Excellency the Governor of Oyo State, Mr Engineer Seyi Makinde, to take the natural giant step into the All Progressives Congress, the APC," Goronyo said.
"Come and align Oyo State fully with the centre under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu."
The pitch comes at a time of intense political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election. The road project itself, which will improve connectivity between Ibadan in Oyo State and Ijebu in Ogun State, had a heavyweight guest list including Minister of Works Dave Umahi, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rasheed Ladoja, Ogun Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, and Oyo APC governorship hopeful, Sharafdeen Abiodun Alli.
Will Makinde take the invitation? For now, all eyes remain on Oyo.
