Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has officially handed over the leadership of the state to his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, following the approval of his 33-day annual leave by the Oyo State House of Assembly.
cbinews.tv reports that the approval was granted during Thursday's plenary after lawmakers considered a formal letter from Governor Makinde notifying the House of his intention to proceed on annual leave, in line with constitutional provisions.
The leave is scheduled to begin on 10 August and end on 11 September 2026, with Governor Makinde expected to resume official duties on 14 September 2026.
The governor's letter was read by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin.
Lawmakers unanimously approved the request and expressed confidence that governance in the state would continue seamlessly during the governor's absence.
With the Assembly's approval, Barrister Bayo Lawal will serve as Acting Governor, overseeing the day-to-day administration of Oyo State until Governor Makinde returns from leave.
Members of the House also commended Governor Makinde for complying with the constitutional requirement of formally notifying the legislature before proceeding on leave, describing the move as a demonstration of respect for democratic principles and the rule of law.
The Deputy Speaker wished the governor a peaceful and refreshing break while expressing confidence in the Acting Governor's ability to sustain the administration's programmes and ensure uninterrupted governance.
The House further directed that its resolution approving the governor's leave be forwarded to the executive arm for the necessary action.
