Ghana’s president expects taskforce proposal on reviving a national carrier as government pushes aviation sector expansion.
President John Dramani Mahama is set to receive a detailed roadmap this week from the National Airline Taskforce as efforts intensify to re-establish Ghana’s national carrier.
CBI News reports that the anticipated briefing is expected to outline a concrete strategy for restoring the country’s footprint in the global aviation industry, including operational, financial and partnership frameworks for a sustainable airline.
Speaking on Monday at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Mahama reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reviving a national airline, describing it as both an economic and symbolic priority. He said the initiative would help stimulate job creation across the aviation value chain, including roles for pilots, engineers, cabin crew and ground staff.
“This week, I’m meeting the task force I set up to work towards the re-establishment of our national airline,” he said. “I’m looking forward to receiving their presentation outlining the concrete roadmap for Ghana’s flag to fly proudly across Africa and in the global aviation space once again.”
The remarks were delivered during a ceremony marking the expansion of Gate C1 at Terminal 3 and the construction of a new concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3—projects aimed at strengthening capacity and positioning Ghana as a regional aviation hub.
Ghana has made several previous attempts to revive a national airline following the collapse of Ghana Airways and later Ghana International Airlines. Analysts say the success of the latest effort will depend on strong governance structures, credible technical partners and a commercially viable business model.
The forthcoming roadmap is expected to provide clarity on these issues as the government seeks to avoid past setbacks and re-enter an increasingly competitive aviation market.
