It’s getting messy at the very top of world football. Portugal legend Luis Figo has publicly told FIFA President Gianni Infantino to step down, and he did not hold back.
So, this is big. Former Portugal captain and Ballon d’Or winner Luis Figo has joined the growing chorus calling for Gianni Infantino to resign as FIFA President.
In a strongly worded post on his official X account, Figo accused Infantino of debasing the office he once promised to elevate and betraying the trust of the global football community.
"Today I join others from across our game and call for Gianni Infantino to resign as FIFA President," Figo wrote.
And he went further. The former Barcelona and Real Madrid star alleged that the FIFA boss has put his own interests ahead of the sport itself.
"Infantino has debased the office that he promised to elevate. He has lied, deceived and tried to feather his own nest at the expense of the game he is supposed to serve," he stated.
Figo also claimed that Infantino has lost the backing of those who matter most inside the game.
"He has lost the support of his senior staff, his closest advisers, the vast majority of people who devote their lives to this sport and even, it would seem, the FIFA Peace Prize winner," he added.
His final verdict was blunt and immediate.
"It is too late to save his dignity, but it is not too late to save football. He should go. Now."
