Abure led faction rejects claims his tenure has expired amid ongoing court dispute.
The Abure led Labour Party on Tuesday reaffirmed that Julius Abure remains the party’s National Chairman and that his tenure is valid until 2028, dismissing contrary claims.
In a statement signed by Abure’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategic Communications, Aju Elumelu James, the party said clarification was necessary due to “a flurry of conflicting narratives” about Abure’s leadership.
The statement stressed that ongoing court proceedings do not justify misinformation and outlined the party’s leadership history. Following the death of former chairman Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam in December 2020, Deputy National Chairman Maria Lebeke was appointed acting chairman.
Before his tenure expired in June 2023, a National Executive Council meeting in April 2023 extended Abure’s leadership by one year.
The faction described claims that Abure’s tenure has ended as “fallacious, misleading, and mischievous” and clarified that the Supreme Court did not rule on party leadership but noted that such matters are internal to the party.
The Abure led group urged members and the public to rely on constitutional facts and ignore misinformation, emphasizing that only the party’s recognised organs, the National Working Committee, National Executive Council, and National Convention, have authority over leadership matters.
The statement comes amid tensions following a January Federal High Court ruling that sacked Abure and recognised a caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman, and recent accusations by the Usman led committee of an alleged invasion of the party secretariat by Abure supporters.
