LIRS hints on integrating AI into tax filing as part of digital reforms, saying intelligent automation will improve compliance and boost Lagos infrastructure funding.
The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) says Artificial Intelligence may soon assist Lagos residents in filing tax returns as part of its ongoing digital reforms.
Executive Chairman of LIRS, Ayodele Subair, disclosed this during a webinar organised by the Fintech Association of Nigeria, themed “Fintech in Nigeria 2026: Navigating the New Tax Regime.”
Subair said the future of tax administration lies in intelligent automation and technology-driven compliance.
“It is a strong possibility that AI agents will assist taxpayers in filing their returns in the future,” he said.
He explained that LIRS has already moved from a paper-based system to a cloud-powered digital platform known as e-Tax, enabling residents to conduct tax transactions remotely.
According to him, the adoption of digital systems has improved operational efficiency and strengthened transparency in tax processes.
CBI News reports that Subair linked improved tax compliance to infrastructure development across Lagos State, stating that revenues support transportation, healthcare, education and environmental projects.
He noted that under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda, tax revenues have funded multimodal transportation initiatives, including rail projects, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) expansion and ferry services.
The LIRS chairman urged residents to embrace tax compliance, emphasising that collective responsibility is essential to building sustainable public infrastructure and services.
