Crash during desert evacuation near Kufra leaves medic and crew dead.
A helicopter crashed in southeastern Libya during a medical evacuation, killing a medic and two crew members, state media reported on Tuesday.
The Libyan News Agency said the aircraft went down overnight near an airbase in the Kufra region, about 60 kilometres north of the Libya Chad border.
The helicopter had been attempting to evacuate a soldier injured in a road accident in the desert.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known, and it remained unclear what happened to the injured soldier. Libyan media reports said two of those killed were foreign nationals, though this has not been confirmed by authorities.
The Matan al Sarra airbase is located in territory controlled by Libya’s eastern administration led by military commander Khalifa Haftar, but officials in the east did not comment on the incident.
Libya remains divided between rival administrations in the east and west, with the western government backed by the United Nations and led by Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah.
The country has struggled to recover from years of instability following the 2011 uprising that toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi.
