What started as a tense football match in Libya quickly spiralled into chaos, with violent clashes leaving several people injured and a government building in Tripoli set on fire.
Fresh unrest has erupted in Libya after violence broke out following a football match between Tripoli’s Al-Ittihad SCSC and Misrata’s Asswehly SC, cbinews.tv reports.
The clash reportedly began in the western town of Tarhuna, about 80 kilometres south of Tripoli, after tensions rose during Thursday’s match played behind closed doors.
According to Libyan news agency LANA, the game was suspended just before the final whistle after Al-Ittihad players protested over a penalty they believed should have been awarded.
The situation quickly escalated outside the stadium, where supporters clashed with security forces, leaving several people injured.
In a related development, Libya’s Presidential Council said the council of ministers’ headquarters in Tripoli was targeted in acts of sabotage and arson during the unrest.
Authorities, however, confirmed that the fire was quickly brought under control.
The Presidential Council has now called for a full investigation into the violence, stressing that grievances and feelings of injustice must be addressed through legal means and not through violence.
