What happens to democracy when the ballot gets smaller? Jos residents aren’t having it, and they’re speaking up.
Following a court directive asking INEC to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the debate over Nigeria’s political future is heating up. And if you ask folks in Jos, Plateau State, one thing is clear: people want a fair shot for every party.
Speaking to CBINewstv, residents didn’t mince words. For them, democracy only works when the playing field is level and the options are open.
CBI News correspondent Abideen Muhammad caught up with locals who say political competition should stay fair, inclusive, and wide open.
Civil servant Bin Hussain put it plainly, Nigeria needs multiple parties because everyone deserves the right to choose who leads them. In his view, a one-party system isn’t some magic fix for free or credible elections.
Businessman Oche Gabriel reckons the chatter around a possible one-party system is getting louder, especially now that many Nigerians are fed up with how things stand.
For businesswoman Augustina Michael, this isn’t just politics. She argues that cutting down political competition is basically silencing ordinary Nigerians.
Another resident, businessman Lavian Kanmun, reminded us that Nigeria runs a multiparty democracy. Every registered party, he says, should be able to contest elections without being sidelined.
Businessman Ishaya Izang feels the same. All parties deserve a level playing field, he insisted, and should stay registered so Nigerians have real choices.
Meanwhile, businesswoman Serah Ayuba and civil servant Joseph Omaku are worried. Recent political moves, they say, look like they’re nudging Nigeria towards a one-party setup. That won’t help democracy, the economy, or national development, they argued.
Wrapping up her chat with CBINews.tv, Serah Ayuba called on the government to guarantee free, fair and credible elections, where every eligible party gets to take part equally.
Joseph Omaku echoed that, pushing for an open political space where all parties can chase their ambitions freely, giving Nigerians more options when they vote.
The common thread across Jos? Nigerians believe democracy is at its strongest when elections are transparent, inclusive, and fair, with all qualified parties playing by the same rules.
