Lagos is stepping up efforts to tackle violent crime as the state government donates operational vehicles and protective equipment to the newly established police Violent Crime Response Unit.
According to cbinews.tv, the Lagos State Police Command has received new operational assets from the Lagos State Security Trust Fund ahead of the launch of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), part of ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, the Command said the equipment would strengthen crime prevention efforts and improve rapid response operations across Lagos.
The donated items include two operational vehicles, 50 ballistic helmets, 50 bulletproof vests, and 50 ballistic shields designed to improve the safety and effectiveness of officers attached to the new unit.
The Executive Secretary of the LSSTF, Ayodele Ogunsan, while presenting the equipment, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting security agencies with the tools needed for effective policing and public safety.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Command, Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai thanked the Lagos State Government and the LSSTF for the support.
He noted that the new equipment would significantly improve the operational readiness of the VCRU and strengthen the Command’s ability to combat violent crimes, respond quickly to emergencies, and protect lives and property across the state.
The initiative is part of the ongoing police reform agenda being driven under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
