Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, is calling on Lagosians to stay indoors and get stuck in for the May edition of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

It’s happening this Saturday, 30 May, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. — just two hours to clean your house, clear those drainage channels, and tidy up your street.

What went down last time

Wahab gave a big shout-out to residents for the “impressive turnout” when the exercise returned in April. But he’s saying we can do even better this month. According to him, a clean environment isn’t just nice to have — it’s key to healthy living and sustainable development.

Who’s monitoring what

This isn’t a “do it if you feel like it” situation. The monthly sanitation is now a permanent programme, cbinews.tv reports. To keep an eye on things:

- First Lady Mrs Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu will be leading officials to check compliance in Alimosho LGA

- Head of Service Olabode Agoro will oversee Apapa LGA

- All 57 LGAs and LCDAs will be out monitoring too

Wahab also confirmed that compactor trucks have been deployed across Lagos to evacuate waste promptly during and after the clean-up.

The rules

1. Don’t use cart pushers — they’re illegal. Stick with the PSP operators; their coverage has been expanded.

2. Clean your surroundings or risk an abatement notice. Keep ignoring it and you could face prosecution.

3. No dumping refuse in drainage channels or unauthorised spots. We’re trying to keep Lagos clean *and* flood-free.
