Lagos isn’t playing when it comes to protecting children. The state government has just dropped some serious figures showing how hard they’re going after child abuse, trafficking, neglect and abandonment. And honestly, the numbers are eye-opening.
Speaking at the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, revealed that Lagos recorded 1,437 child protection cases and carried out 5,708 interventions during the review period. The briefing was part of activities marking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s third year in his second term.
So what exactly has Lagos been doing? According to Ogunlende, the Child Protection Unit handled everything from abuse and trafficking to abandonment and neglect cases across the state. And they didn’t just log the reports – they acted.We’re talking 5,708 child protection services in total. That includes rescue operations, investigations, legal help, counselling, rehab, placement services, and psychosocial support for both kids and their families. Out of all the cases, 520 were successfully concluded with “meaningful outcomes” for the vulnerable children involved.
The commissioner also shared some of the high-profile rescues that came from viral social media posts. Remember that disturbing video of a mum beating her child with wires and knives? Ogunlende said the ministry teamed up with the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency and the Nigeria Police Force to rescue two children in that case.His point? Lagos is serious about strengthening its child protection systems and making sure vulnerable kids are safe from abuse, exploitation and violence.
Bottom line: 1,437 cases is a lot. But 5,708 interventions shows the state isn’t just watching – it’s stepping in.
