No cases in Nigeria yet, but Lagos isn’t taking any chances — and if you run a hotel, club or event space, the Safety Commission’s got a new to-do list for you.
Right, so here’s what’s happening — Lagos has just put out an Ebola alert, according to cbinews.tv.
The Lagos State Safety Commission is asking every hotel, nightclub, event centre, lounge, restaurant and other hospitality spot to tighten up their health and safety game. Why now? Well, there’ve been recent Ebola outbreaks reported in parts of Central and East Africa, and with Murtala Muhammed International Airport ramping up biosecurity screening, Lagos wants to stay ahead of it.
To be clear — and the Commission stressed this — there are no confirmed Ebola cases in Lagos or anywhere in Nigeria right now. But as cbinews.tv reports, DG Lanre Mojola said the warning is precautionary. Makes sense when you’re a major international hub with thousands of travellers passing through daily.
So, what are venues being told to do? Quite a bit, actually:
The quick checklist from the Safety Commission:
- Hand hygiene, sorted: Get those handwashing stations back up at entrances and key spots — running water, soap, or alcohol-based sanitiser. Non-negotiable.
- Clean like you mean it: Step up cleaning routines with hospital-grade disinfectant. Think door handles, handrails, counters, payment terminals, menus — anything people touch.
- Train your team: Staff need to know early symptoms, do daily health checks, and stay home if they’ve got a fever or feel unwell. No heroics.
- Have an isolation spot: Set aside a temporary area where anyone showing severe symptoms can wait safely before medics arrive.
- Watch your crowds: Manage how packed venues get and keep spaces well-ventilated.
Mojola’s message to operators, as reported by cbinews.tv, was basically: stay calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate. Safety officials will be doing more compliance checks around the state too.
If you suspect something? Don’t wait. Isolate the person and call Lagos State health lines straight away: 08023169485, 08033565529 or 07000SAFETY.
Bottom line: it’s prevention mode for now. Lagos is busy, borders are busy, and the Safety Commission wants hospitality businesses leading on public health. Better safe than sorry.
