Nigeria’s presidential election is scheduled for Feb. 20, 2027...
Nurses employed by the Lagos State Government are facing pressure to register for voter cards with Nigeria’s electoral body and pledge support for the ruling party, reports SaharaReporters.
The Platform claims sources said nurses were being urged to obtain voter cards from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and mobilised to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) through WhatsApp groups.
“What we have noticed is that some persons who have not even indicated interest in joining the APC, as long as they have access to their credentials, they automatically list them as APC members,” one nurse said.
Another source corroborated the claims, describing what was termed subtle coercion within the system.
SaharaReporters said one message its reviewed, shared under the umbrella “Nurses4BAT” and signed by Taiye-Ulebor Afusat, Head of Unit, Nursing Services, urged members to visit an office near INEC’s Ikeja GRA office to register or update voter details.
“Good morning, great political nurses of Lagos State. If you don't have a voter's card or you want to change your information or voting address, please go to this office close to the INEC office at Ikeja GRA,” the message read.
The group is said to be mobilising support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including allegedly mandating nurses under the Lagos State Government payroll to join the movement. It added that there may be an “arrangement” with an INEC official to facilitate voter registration.
Another message circulating within the group instructed members to contact a named individual and identify themselves as being from the LASUTH Nursing Directorate. Members were also urged not to share the information outside the group.
SaharaReporters said it obtained screenshots of WhatsApp conversations.
According to a source, nurses who have submitted their credentials at any time could find their names added to the APC membership register without their consent.
In recent election cycles, concerns over vote-buying, the credibility of the voters’ register and electoral violence have raised questions about the integrity of the process.
Earlier this month, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) accused the APC of coercing civil servants in several states to register under its electronic membership drive.
In a statement, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi described the alleged practice as unconstitutional and a breach of civil service neutrality, saying it amounted to economic coercion.
