No LASRRA number, no school admission? If you have a child in Lagos, here is the new rule you need to know before resumption.

Here is the gist.

The Lagos State Government has made it compulsory for every child seeking admission into public and private schools in the state to have a LASRRA registration number. And it kicks in from the 2026/2027 academic session.

According to a directive announced on Friday, 4th September 2026, all schools must obtain and record the valid LASRRA number of every learner as part of the enrolment process from Monday, 14th September.

The directive was approved by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, and will be implemented through the Office of Education Quality Assurance.

So what is the idea behind it?

The government says it is all about creating a proper, verifiable database of learners to help with better planning, monitoring and service delivery in the education sector.

Alli-Balogun explained that capturing learners on the LASRRA database will strengthen school record-keeping, make identification and verification much easier, and give the government credible data for evidence-based decisions.

What does this mean for schools and parents?

For schools, you are now required to include each learner's LASRRA registration number in your admission and school records. You are also expected to sensitise parents and guardians about it.

For parents, if your child or ward is yet to register with LASRRA, you are advised to get it done before the new session begins. The government was quite clear that this registration is mandatory.

On data protection, the state also directed schools to keep learners' personal information confidential and handle it securely in line with data protection standards.

Speaking on the implementation, the Director-General of the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Dr Sulaimon Olagoke Ogunmuyiwa, said his office will work with LASRRA and other relevant agencies to work out how unique PINs will be generated and assigned to learners.

He added that sensitisation, registration and verification support will be provided to schools, parents and learners, and that compliance will be part of OEQA's monitoring exercise across public and private schools in Lagos.

So, parents and school owners, now is the time to get that LASRRA registration sorted.
