No Ebola cases in Nigeria right now, but Lagos isn’t taking any chances — especially in Eti-Osa, Ibeju-Lekki and Epe.
Heads up, Lagos folks — especially if you’re in Eti-Osa, Ibeju-Lekki or Epe. The Lagos State Government is asking everyone to stay alert and take a few simple precautions against Ebola Virus Disease.
The message came through this week from Lagos State Health District III, who are stepping up public awareness, surveillance and general preparedness, according to a report by cbinews.tv.
In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary for Health District III, Dr Monsurat Adeleke, the government reminded us that Ebola is a viral disease that can get really serious, really fast if it’s not caught and managed early.
The whole point of the sensitisation campaign? Help cut down transmission risks by getting residents clued up on prevention and making sure any suspected cases get reported quickly.
Dr Adeleke explained that Ebola mainly spreads through direct contact with blood, saliva, vomit and other bodily fluids from infected people or animals.
So, what should you do? She’s advising residents to steer clear of anyone suspected to be infected, avoid contact with dead bodies, and keep away from wild animals like bats and monkeys — they can carry the virus. Basic hygiene is key too: wash your hands often, keep hand sanitiser handy, and don’t eat meat that isn’t properly cooked.
“Although there is no confirmed Ebola outbreak in Nigeria at this time, vigilance, prompt reporting, adherence to infection prevention measures, and community awareness remain essential to protecting lives and preventing the spread of the disease,” Adeleke said, as reported by cbinews.tv.
She also noted that Health District III is working with other agencies to tighten disease surveillance, public education and emergency readiness across the three LGAs.
Bottom line: stay alert. If you notice unusual symptoms or suspect a case, report it to health authorities straight away. It’s all about protecting each other.
