Heard the gist that KAI officers are being swapped for agberos? Lagos State says not so fast, here’s what’s really going on.
So, there’s been talk flying around that Lagos State wants to swap out KAI for transport unions to handle environmental enforcement. Well, according to cbinewstv, the State Government has come out to shut that rumour down completely.
On Tuesday, June 23, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, cleared the air in a statement posted on X. He said the recent meetings with transport unions were never about replacing the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, better known as KAI.
The idea, he explained, is simply to get transport operators to help keep parks and garages cleaner. Think less illegal trading and random waste dumping in bus stops and motor parks. But enforcement? That’s still firmly in KAI’s hands.
“Contrary to the misinformation being circulated by some bloggers and commentators, the recent engagement… is not intended to replace the statutory responsibilities of LAGESC,” Wahab stated, as reported by cbinewstv.
He made it clear that KAI, working with the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Task Force, remains the only body legally empowered to enforce environmental rules in the state.
The partnership with transport unions is just that, a partnership. It’s meant to boost compliance and get everyone involved in keeping Lagos clean, not to hand over KAI’s job to anyone else.
“This partnership does not in any way diminish, transfer, or replace the enforcement responsibilities of LAGESC and the Task Force,” the statement added. “Rather, it is a complementary initiative designed to strengthen environmental compliance, sanitation standards, and stakeholder participation.”
Bottom line from the government: keeping Lagos clean is still top priority, and they’ll keep working with stakeholders to make the city cleaner and healthier for everyone.
