Oto-Awori communities clash, residents flee..
Suspected hoodlums from the Ijanikin and Oto-Awori communities clashed on Saturday, blocking the Lagos-Badagry Expressway and forcing residents and commuters to flee, witnesses said.
The confrontation triggered panic as people ran for safety. Commercial activities were disrupted and motorists were stranded as the highway was barricaded.
Residents said the violence stemmed from a long-running dispute between the neighbouring communities that has flared repeatedly over the years without a lasting resolution.
The incident occurred along the Badagry Expressway, a major route linking parts of Lagos to border towns and used daily by thousands of commuters.
Community members called on the Lagos State Government and the Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area to intervene urgently and address the root causes of the crisis, warning that failure to resolve the dispute could lead to further violence and property damage.
In a related development, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh on Saturday visited the area for on the point assessment.
The police added that the situation had been brought under control.
“The situation is under control. The Commissioner of Police personally led teams from various Police units to the location, and normalcy has since been restored. Further information will be provided shortly,” Lagos police spokesman SP Abimbola Adebisi said.
