Big move from the Lagos State Government! Petroleum tankers will no longer be allowed to transport edible oil in Lagos, as authorities tighten food safety measures to protect consumers from possible contamination risks.
The Lagos State Government has officially banned the use of petroleum tankers for transporting edible oil across the state, in a major step toward improving food safety and public health.
According to a statement by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), the decision follows growing concerns about the health risks linked to using fuel tankers to carry edible oil, due to possible chemical residue contamination.
To address the issue, LASCOPA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with key stakeholders in the edible oil transport sector. The agreement involves the Marketers and Sellers of Edible Oil Association of Nigeria (MASEON), the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and the Association of Edible Oil Tanker Drivers of Nigeria.
Under the new framework, only food-grade certified tankers will be allowed to transport edible oil. The agreement also introduces stricter compliance measures, including tanker registration, regular inspections, random spot checks, laboratory testing of edible oil samples, and joint enforcement operations.
LASCOPA says the move is aimed at strengthening hygiene standards, improving traceability in the supply chain, and boosting consumer confidence in food transportation across Lagos State.
The agency also warned that enforcement will be intensified under the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency Law, 2025, while monitoring and investigation of consumer complaints will continue.
