Commuters in Lagos will no longer be allowed to move goods or heavy luggage on regulated public buses as the state government moves to improve safety, comfort, and efficiency in the transport system.
The Lagos State Government has announced a ban on the movement of goods and heavy luggage on all regulated public transport buses across the state.
According to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the directive will officially take effect from June 1, 2026.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, the agency said the decision followed growing complaints from commuters and operational challenges caused by the increasing use of public buses for transporting goods and bulky loads.
LAMATA explained that the practice has affected passenger comfort, safety, and the smooth delivery of transport services across Lagos.
The authority disclosed that the decision was reached after a strategic meeting with heads of operations and maintenance of bus operating companies, where stakeholders agreed that the movement of goods on regulated buses must be stopped and properly reorganised.
The agency also warned that enforcement of the directive would be strict.
According to LAMATA, any bus driver caught transporting goods during the suspension period will be immediately sacked and blacklisted.
The authority further stated that any ground staff or LAMATA personnel found assisting or permitting the loading of goods onto buses at terminals or loading points would also face instant dismissal.
LAMATA stressed that there would be zero tolerance for violations, adding that the move is part of efforts to restore order, improve safety, and ensure more efficient public transportation in the state.
Commuters, transport operators, terminal officials, and members of the public have now been advised to make alternative arrangements for the movement of goods ahead of the enforcement date.
