Lagos is stepping up its street cleanup drive, and 226 beggars have just been picked up across the state in a single day.
The Lagos State Government has ramped up its environmental enforcement campaign with the arrest of 226 beggars on Thursday. The move is part of a wider push to promote public order, safety and environmental cleanliness, cbinews.tv reports.
The arrests were made by a joint enforcement team made up of operatives from the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Task Force and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development in a statement. He said the exercise is part of the government’s sustained intervention to tackle activities considered harmful to the environmental and social wellbeing of residents.
Wahab explained that the daily cleanup and enforcement operations are aimed at keeping Lagos cleaner, safer and more organised.
Those apprehended will be properly profiled and documented by relevant authorities before being returned to their respective states of origin. The repatriation, he said, will follow existing government procedures and policies.
The commissioner restated the state government’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations while pushing for a more orderly urban environment across Lagos.
He also called on residents to back the government’s efforts by obeying environmental laws and discouraging practices that undermine public safety and cleanliness.
