The APC has settled the debate over who will join Dr Obafemi Hamzat on its 2027 Lagos governorship ticket, with Princess Damilola Sonayon-James emerging as the party’s preferred choice.
According to cbinewstv, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially chosen Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as the running mate to its governorship candidate, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, ahead of the 2027 Lagos State governorship election.
The decision appears to have ended weeks of speculation over who would clinch the coveted position. Barrister Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, the current Secretary to the Lagos State Government, had been widely tipped for the role and was strongly linked to the ticket.
However, party insiders say Sonayon-James got the nod following consultations involving President Bola Tinubu and the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the APC in Lagos.
A grassroots politician with years of experience in party mobilisation, Sonayon-James currently serves as the APC’s Assistant State Woman Leader in Lagos. Beyond politics, she is also recognised as an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) expert and sustainability risk consultant, with a background in public service and community development.
Reports suggest that Hamzat’s governorship ambition has continued to gain momentum, attracting support from labour leaders, transport unions and various religious groups across the state.
Sources within the party revealed that after Hamzat emerged as the APC’s consensus candidate, consultations began on selecting a running mate capable of strengthening the party’s chances in the election. While an earlier choice reportedly faced resistance from some stakeholders, the eventual selection of Sonayon-James is being viewed as a strategic move designed to unite key interests within the party ahead of the 2027 polls.
Meanwhile, Salu-Hundeyin remains a prominent figure in the Lagos administration, playing a key role in governance coordination, policy implementation and the state's development agenda.
With the ticket now taking shape, attention is expected to shift towards campaign preparations and the APC’s broader strategy for retaining power in Lagos in 2027.
