With the June 20 by-elections fast approaching, the Labour Party has put its house in order, and some big names are on the ticket.
The Labour Party has wrapped up its primaries ahead of the June 20 by-elections, confirming candidates for six vacant seats across the country, cbinews.tv reports.
The primaries took place on Monday in the affected states, following the timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
National Publicity Secretary Ken Asogwa confirmed the outcomes in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday.
Who made the list?
In Nasarawa North, former Minister of Information Labaran Maku secured the party’s ticket through a consensus arrangement. The exercise, held at the party’s zonal office, saw a strong turnout of members who backed his candidacy for the senatorial district by-election.
Over in Enugu North Senatorial District, seasoned diplomat Amb. Simon Ejike Eze also emerged as flagbearer via a peaceful consensus process. Party members from across the district turned out to endorse him.
Other consensus candidates include:
Engr. Sam Kinanee – Rivers South-East Senatorial District
Barrister Ige Aiyeobasan Asemudara – Ondo South Senatorial District
Abubakar Yahaya Muhammad – Dawaki Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency, Kano State
Muhammad Aliyu Galadima – Zuru State Constituency by-election, Kebbi State
Why the vacancies?
The seats for Enugu North, Nasarawa North and Rivers South-East fell vacant following the deaths of the serving senators in the 10th Senate. Ondo South became vacant after Senator Jimoh Ibrahim resigned his appointment by President Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Senator Okey Ezea of Enugu North died in a Lagos hospital on November 18, 2025, aged 62. Senator Godiya Akwashiki of Nasarawa North passed away on December 31, 2025, aged 52. Senator Barinada Mpigi of Rivers South-East died on February 18, 2026, aged 64.
The Labour Party praised INEC for monitoring the primaries, describing the process as peaceful, transparent and successful across all constituencies.
In its statement, the party congratulated the candidates and called on members, supporters and “lovers of democracy” in the affected areas to rally behind them ahead of the June 20 polls.
According to the party, the chosen candidates were selected for their proven competence, integrity and commitment to the LP’s ideals of social democracy, equal opportunity and social justice.
